Teynham School in Sittingbourne win Kent is Delicious Cookery Competition
- Live cooking final took place at the Kent County Show
- Winning school win £300 in vouchers for school cooking or gardening project
A team of pupils from Teynham Primary School in Sittingbourne have been crowned winners of the Kent is Delicious Cookery Competition at the Kent County Show on Friday 7 July. In the competition organised by the Diocese of Canterbury, they fought off tough competition from Hoath Primary School, Canterbury, as they cooked up a tasty breakfast dish in front of a live audience.
The lucky winners take home a first prize of £300 in vouchers to put towards a school cookery or gardening project of their choice. The runners-up receive £100 in vouchers, and both finalist teams receive £50 worth of Kent Farmers’ Market Association vouchers to put towards a tasty hamper of food from their local farmers’ market.
The Kent is Delicious Cookery Competition is open to all primary schools across the county, and aims to raise their awareness of the quality and importance of local and seasonal produce in Kent. It’s organised by the Diocese of Canterbury which represents the Church of England in East Kent, and is held in partnership with the Kent County Agricultural Society, Produced in Kent, Kent Farmers’ Market Association and the National Fruit Show.
David, Oliver, Chloe and Jessica really impressed the judges, not only with a truly locally inspired recipe, but with their knowledge and passion for the local ingredients that went into making their Fresh Kent Berry Smoothie and Breakfast Pancakes made with Pure Kent flour, and drizzled with honey from Chilton Manor farm.
The Rt Rev Trevor Willmott, The Bishop of Dover and in Canterbury, was joined by an expert panel of local producers and food experts from Biddenden Vineyard, Produced in Kent, Kent Fine Foods and Kent Farmers’ Market Association, to taste each school’s breakfast. Mrs Duncan, who accompanied the children and supported them with their entry, said that they’d had a great experience:
“The children have absolutely loved being here. They’ve enjoyed the whole build-up, the investigating, and everyone here today being so supportive. I would really recommend other schools take part.”
Canon Caroline Pinchbeck, Director of the Communities and Partnerships Framework at the Diocese of Canterbury, said:
“I want to congratulate both teams that have taken part and applaud them for their creativity and team work in the kitchen.
“One thing we have here in Kent is some of the best food you can find anywhere in the country. Unfortunately, a lot of us perhaps don’t realise it. I hope that all the young people involved in this final go out and share all that they have learnt about their local produce and tell somebody else that Kent really is delicious!”
As part of the competition schools are asked to show how they developed their recipe, what they found out about local ingredients, the local producers they discovered along the way, and how seasonality influenced the ingredients they chose.
