People across the Diocese are getting ready to raise money for their local church or chapel with Ride and Stride.
The annual event which takes place this year on Saturday 12th September. Many of their unique stories can be found on the Friends of Kent Churches Ride and Stride JustGiving Page which this year will makes sponsorship even easier: http://www.justgiving.com/kentchurches/raisemoney
Stories like that of Elaine and Ian who each year tandem across the Romney Marsh, and who are being joined in their endeavour by Beatrice and Andrew – also on a tandem – as they raise money for, as they put it: “The wonderful, unique St Rumwold Church in Bonnington”. They’ve already raised £570 so far.
Or Tim who is cycling on behalf of Loose Church Heritage Group Save Our Spire Appeal which needs £60,000 to replace the shingles on their Church Spire to keep the bell tower watertight. £675 raised so far.
Jo Tinkler from the parish of Bewsborough has organised a ten church architectural tour which will begin at St. Nicholas, Barfrestone and will follow the ancient pilgrim path, the Via Francigena to St. Edmund’s Chapel in Dover (to join her and raise funds email: email@example.com)
With just under one month to go until the big day, there is still time to get involved in the biggest open church day of the year. Hundreds of churches across Kent will be open to visit and to see a full list click here
You can plan your own route, and visit as many churches as you like. Get sponsored to cycle or walk it, and you can raise money for your local church or chapel at the same time. Fifty per cent of sponsorship money raised goes to church building of your choice, with the other fifty per cent going to help the most needy churches and chapels in use in the county.
Last year over £135,000, including gift aid, was raised in Kent, with 745 churches and chapels involved. A poster for churches and friends to display can be downloaded here.
