‎#MondayMeet‬ – Nigel Collins, Co-Warden of Readers

nigelcollinsI’m Nigel Collins and, together with Canon Donald Lawton, I’m Co-Warden of Readers. We each work one day a week based at Diocesan House in Canterbury; my normal office day is Wednesday. Readers are nationally accredited and theologically trained lay ministers who are normally licensed to deaneries by the Bishop as ministers of the word (I’ve been a Reader for just over 16 years). Along with Donald, my role is to encourage, promote and support Reader ministry within the life of the Diocese. The job is very varied, but includes providing advice, administrative and pastoral support as well as planning and delivering events for Readers. At the moment I am planning and coordinating the annual Reader Selection Day which takes place at the end of June; whilst at the same time planning for the New Readers Residential weekend in September. It’s quite a challenge to fit everything into one day a week, and so we have to manage our diaries efficiently. For the remainder of the week I’m employed as the lay minister of an ecumenical fresh expression of church in Dover which has a strong community-mission focus, this keeps me firmly rooted in hands-on ministry.
