At the Kent Show on Sunday 15 July (4pm), ‘Countryfile’ and ex-‘Newsround’ presenter,

John Craven OBE and the Bishop of Dover, the Right Reverend Trevor Willmott, will present awards to Kent school children who have taken part in a Kent produce cooking competition.

Four Church of England primary schools in Kent were invited to take part in the competition to design a menu and a recipe using Kent produce. The competition, which is in its first year has been organised by the Kent County Agricultural Society (KCAS) and the Diocese of Canterbury.

Children from all four schools will attend the afternoon judging event, which will see judges including Roz Day of Kent County Agricultural Society and Jill Sargent of Produced in Kent, taste one dish created by each school.

The winners will be announced at 4pm in the Alan Day house (in the Main Kent Show office by the Astor Ring) at the Kent Showground.

Describing the aims of the competition, Bishop Trevor commented: “By asking children to design a menu and a recipe and then to cook a dish using Kent ingredients and produce, we hope to help children see that Kent really is the Garden of England.” If the competition is successful this year, KCAS and Canterbury Diocese plan to invite all Church of England schools in Kent to participate in 2013.

The winning school will receive funded coach travel for years three and four to attend the 2013 ‘Living Land’ event in Kent.
