The Bishop of Dover, the Right Reverend Trevor Willmott, led a special service on Thursday, 8th January to license and install the Reverend Ian Andrew Jacobson as the new Priest-in-Charge at St Laurence-in-Thanet Parish – a benefice, which comprises St Laurence, St Catherine (Manston), St Christopher (Newington) and St Mary (Cliffsend). Rev Andrew joins St Laurence from Gibraltar where he was serving at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and fulfilling the role of Mediterranean Mission to Seafarers Port Chaplain.
Rev. Andrew was welcomed by several representatives of the Ramsgate and Thanet communities: our MP for South Thanet: Laura Sandys; Rev Alison Kitchener of Newington Free Church, representing Ramsgate churches of other Christian denominations; Rev. Paul Worledge, the Area Dean; Mr William Pettit, representing Canterbury Cathedral; Mrs Cheryl Belsey, Mr John Hawkins and Mrs Marcia Neve, representing groups within the team churches. Other prominent members of the localcommunityattended the service, including, Mayor of Ramsgate: Cllr Patricia Moore and Mayoress Penny Webb. Mrs Michelle Palmer, Headteacher of St Laurence Junior Academy and Mr John Goldsmith, a Sunday-School teacher, with other members of the congregations of the four churches took part in the Celebration of the Ministry. Rev. Andrew was presented with a Bible, by Mrs Mary Butcher & MrsSue Cox, Readers in the Team Ministry. District Church Council members presented the baptismal water and Rev. Andrew sprinkled members of the congregation with this to remind of discipleship promises made during baptism.
During the service the congregation listened to a reading from Mark 9 vv33-37 in which Jesus advises his squabbling disciples that those who wish to be first shall be last and those that are last shall be first. Bishop Trevor emphasised this lesson in his sermon reminding the congregation that our duties and allegiances should not be to our church group, nor to ourselves, but to God.
Speaking during the service, Rev. Andrew and his wife Jane thanked the St Laurence Team for their warm welcome, making their transition from their placement in Gibraltar to Ramsgate a pleasurable one. Rev. Andrew expressed his excitement in anticipating his new role as team leader or Priest-in-Charge.
After the service there was a short reception held in the Parish Hall.
There was a good turn-out on Sunday, 11th January (10am), when Reverend Andrew Jacobson led his first Parish Communion with a Team Service at St Laurence for members of all four parish churches. He preached on the Gospel reading from Mark 1 vv 4-11which tells of John the Baptist’s role in preparing the pathway for Jesus.
