    The Life of Prayer

All Christians are called to develop their prayer life. This relationship with God is, at its simplest, what we mean by spirituality. For a relationship to be alive it needs to grow, change and develop. In the life of prayer this can be an exciting journey of discovery, of ourselves and God, but it can also be difficult and painful. In all these different stages we need companionship, of those who have gone before us and those who are journeying alongside us now.

There are many resources in the diocese and nationally for Retreats and Quiet Days, and to help you find a leader for such a day in your parish. The Spirituality Group organises regular days on different ways of praying and aims to be a resource to the deaneries in their own events.

Many parishes and deaneries have hosted a Week of Accompanied Prayer, where participants spend 30 minutes a day in prayer and 30 minutes talking about their time of prayer to a prayer companion. This week can be the beginning of new ways of praying and discovering the value of talking to another person. Some who have been on a Week of Accompanied Prayer may be selected to train to be themselves prayer companion and accompany others. For many this week is a stepping stone to finding a permanent prayer companion, spiritual director or soul friend.

The ministry of spiritual direction grows out of having our own spiritual director and gradually finding that others want to talk to us about their relationship with God.
Information on all these possibilities can be obtained from the Diocesan Adviser in Spirituality, (please note that this appointment is currently under review)
