The Diocese of Canterbury has 103 schools: 31 Voluntary Aided Schools, 69 Voluntary Controlled Schools, 1 Church of England Academy and 2 Foundation Schools; we also support the two voluntary controlled Methodist schools in the diocese. In total our schools serve over 24,000 pupils. Within the Diocese we enjoy a close relationship with Christ Church Canterbury University which has a Church of England foundation. In addition there are a number of independent schools with a Christian character.
The Board of Education continues to develop partnerships between parishes and schools and provides advice relating to the church’s ministry and mission with children and young people.
Canterbury Diocesan Board of Education works closely with Kent County Council, both formally and informally. Our staff are members of a number of Kent wide committees, including Kent's Policy Overview Committee, SACRE, the Admissions Forum and the Schools Funding Forum. We do all in our power practically and politically to support the 103 Church of England schools in the Diocese and to work co-operatively with the neighbouring Diocese of Rochester, as well as the Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark, in ensuring that church schools remain at the forefront of educational good practice, underpinned by a distinctive Christian ethos.
The Diocesan Education team is based in Canterbury at Diocesan House, and we provide advice, expertise and support to assist schools and parishes. Our work covers many issues, ranging from schools to voluntary youth and children’s groups, collective worship to religious education, from buildings issues to school organisation, from governance to leadership. We run INSET sessions for headteachers, RE co-ordinators and other staff. We also have a programme of training for governors of Church of England schools.
