Kent churchyards and cemeteries win awards

Kent God's Acre Project award winners at the ceremony at Chilham Church

The first ever Kent award ceremony which celebrates the management of churchyards and cemeteries took place at Chilham Church on Saturday (19 November). The 'Kent God's Acre Project' competition attracted entries from communities across Kent and Medway, a number of whom gathered on Saturday to receive their awards and to share ideas.

The best 'Wildlife Churchyard' award went to the Friends of Margate Cemetery. Other winners included St Peter's churchyard in Bekesbourne, near Canterbury which won the 'Churchyard Interpretation' award and St Leonard, Leaveland, near Faversham which was awarded the Kent God's Acre 'Community Involvement' prize.

The Reverend Canon Caroline Pinchbeck, Rural Life Adviser for Canterbury Diocese, commented: "The God's Acre project is a national scheme which recognizes churchyards and cemeteries as significant areas for flora, fauna and social history and seeks to provide advice and guidance for their management. The Kent God's Acre project is convened by the Dioceses of Canterbury and Rochester and brings together fifteen partner organisations including the Kent Bat Group, Kent Mammal Group, British Lichen Society, Kent Wildlife Trust to provide support for people, often volunteers, involved in the care and management of churchyards and cemeteries."

In addition to the awards the Kent God's Acre Project have developed a Churchyard Mark scheme with three levels which encourages communities to look at various aspects of churchyard management.

More information about the Kent God's Acre Project and the Kent God's Acre Project Churchyard Mark scheme can be obtained from Canon Caroline Pinchbeck, Rural Life Adviser for Canterbury Diocese: 01227 459401 or cpinchbeck@diocant.org
