I work all night, I work all day,
to pay the bills I have to pay

Street porters (cargadores) and women selling goods on the street (ambulantes) are two of the poorest and most marginalised groups in Bolivia's capital La Paz. They are treated like dirt and earn very little. They are indigenous people who have migrated to the city in search of an income when they can no longer survive on what they can grow on their land. Through Christian Aid, we are supporting Fundación Machaqa, which is giving them a basic education, helping them to assert their rights and to develop better ways of making a living.

  • And still there never seems to be
a single penny left for me

For over a decade, CMS has partnered with Youth Life to offer hope to marginalised youth in Central Asia through breakdance clubs. Lives are transformed through physical, social, career and spiritual support, including crisis family management, life skills training, careers advice and multi-media training. As most staff and volunteers have been through the clubs, they have changed from kids with little hope for the future to leaders for the next generation. Youth Life has a vision to impact neighbouring countries to share hope through breakdancing, youth clubs and vocational training.

  • In my dreams I have a plan…..

This is a unique opportunity to reach out to a small isolated community in Tulear, the poorest part of Madagascar in partnership with the Rt. Revd. Todd McGregor, in his new diocese.

By constructing a locally-managed secondary school in the community, the children will benefit from the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills. Greater education also will result in improved economic and social conditions for the community.

  • All the things I could do,
if I had a little money

In 1983 The Diocese of Peshawar set up a playgroup for children with physical and learning difficulties, who were previously neglected by their communities. The USPG-supported centre has now grown into a showcase for training in special education and a resource for community based rehabilitation. If they 'had a little money' they could improve these vital services, which are provided irrespective of religion, caste or gender..

    It's a rich man's world!.

Was it ever and should it be a rich man’s world? How about poor women? An extra billion slip into real poverty as the 'crunch' pushes many back below the dollar a day bread line and hits the poor worse than ever.

There is widespread anger at the wealthy continuing to seek pay outs, bonuses and protecting their own positions at the cost of the wider world. As the deep inadequacy of materialism to generate happiness strikes so many, we need to turn this change of mood from blaming individuals to creatively rethinking our own UK economy; to finding growth that is sustainable and compatible with wellbeing for all. The time is NOW and we need to help students in Kent understand what has gone wrong and be creative about new ways of living.

This is what Kent and the Wider World is trying to do.
