Easter Monday 2011
Around 700 young people participated in this year's Easter Monday Youth Pilgrimage. The Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of Dover joined pilgrims as they walked from meeting places across the Diocese to unite together for a special Cathedral service, the theme of which was 'What's your story?'

Diocesan Synod - and Cathedral Eucharist
On May 7th Canterbury Diocesan Synod will debate and vote on the draft legislation for Women in the Episcopacy. To view the motion and background papers on women in the episcopacy: www.canterburydiocese.org/focuson/march11
Immediately before Synod, a Eucharist will be held in the Cathedral and will include the licensing of newly appointed officers.

  • Miss Morag Ellis QC, who will be welcomed and licensed as the new Commissary General.
  • The new Chairs, Mrs Caroline Spencer, Ms Judith Rigby, Mr Anthony Beattie and the Reverend Doctor Stephen Laird, who will be officially welcomed by Bishop Trevor along with the Reverend Canon Kerry Thorpe who will be welcomed into his new ministry as Mission and Growth Adviser, a post he starts in July.
  • The Reverend Caroline Pinchbeck, and Reverend Simon Foulkes will also be licensed in their new diocesan roles.

Churchwardens, Sides-people and others from the three Archdeaconries are invited to attend these services for prayer, worship and the formal admission of churchwardens.

    10 May Ashford Archdeaconry including the Deaneries of Ashford, Elham, Dover and Sandwich with Archdeacon Philip
    11 May Canterbury Archdeaconry including the Deaneries of Canterbury, East Bridge, Reculver, Thanet and West Bridge with Archdeacon Sheila
    12 May Maidstone Archdeaconry including the Deaneries of Maidstone, North Downs, Ospringe, Sittingbourne, Tenterden, Romney and Weald with Archdeacons Philip and Sheila.
Anyone who cannot attend their specific archdeaconry date is welcome to attend the alternative dates.

New Commissary General announced
Miss Morag Ellis QC has been announced as the new Commissary General, following the retirement of His Honour Richard Walker. Miss Ellis, described by Bishop Trevor as
'a pre-eminent barrister in the field of town and country planning' will preside over the Commissary Court, which derives its authority from Church of England legislation. In particular, its jurisdiction covers the grant of faculties to authorize changes to church buildings and the use of consecrated land.

New Chairs Announced
At a recent meeting of Archbishop's Council, Bishop Trevor announced the appointment of Mrs Caroline Spencer as the Chair of the Ministry Framework and the Reverend Dr Stephen Laird as the new Chair of the Diocesan Mission and Ministry Committee.

Bishop Trevor thanks churches who supported the New Zealand appeal
Following a request from Bishop Trevor for prayers and support for the victims of the New Zealand earthquake, the Bishop is delighted to report that nearly £7,000 has been raised for this appeal. Bishop Trevor said: "I thank everyone for their prayers and generosity - a true mark of the Christian Community is that it doesn't stop praying and caring for others even when the media spotlight may turn towards a different focus."

ALM Training Changes
The Authorised Lay Ministry training team has announced changes to the 2011/12 training programme which will help individuals with their call to discipleship. From September 2012 the Core Module will become an eight session course called 'Deepening Discipleship' and will be offered in five venues in the Diocese or on request to parishes/deaneries who can gather a group of 10-15 people. Churches that ran 'Confident Discipleship' lent courses are being asked to complete a survey to provide their view of discipleship. See (www.surveymonkey.com/s/discipleship) for more details.
From 10 May, material for the nine days of prayer between Ascension and Pentecost will be available. This will include pocket prayers which can be distributed to every member of your congregation and nine 'Daily Fruit' short services for use by individuals, small groups and larger congregations, which include a time of reflection and personal prayer.

Loerrach 2011
In October there will be a visit to Loerrach, a region south of the Black Forest in Germany on the banks of the Rhine with which our diocese is linked. Guests will stay with local families and in the wonderful Schloss Beuggen. Part of the visit will be in conference with our friends from Loerrach and from Berlin-Zossen, where themes around ministry and discipleship will be discussed. Bishop Trevor will be accompanying the group. The dates are Thursday 10 - Wednesday 26 October, and the invitation is open to anyone from the diocese. Training workshops for Parish Officers
These workshops aim to help: Churchwardens - PCC Secretaries - PCC Treasurers, learn about their roles and legal responsibilities in the context of current legislation and Diocesan policies.
Parish Officers will receive information about the Diocesan structure and the availability of Central Services which can support them in their roles. It is also an opportunity to meet fellow parish officers from around the Diocese and to share ideas and experience. These courses have been consistently well received and appreciated by those who have attended them in the past.

Spiritual Accompaniment
Responding to the need to support both ordained and lay ministers in a deeper awareness of the presence of God in their lives. Applications are invited for a third programme of spiritual accompaniment training to begin early in 2012, offered jointly by Canterbury and Rochester dioceses.
Year 1 of the two-year programme takes place over six Saturdays on a roughly bi-monthly schedule. An application form, supporting letters and a Programme Brochure which describes the (current) course, with dates and venues, is available at: http://www.canterburydiocese.org/spiritualaccompaniment

New CEO for the Canterbury Gift
Andrew Edwards, currently chief executive of the National Churches Trust, will be joining the Canterbury Gift as chief executive in August 2011. The Canterbury Gift is the charity which raises money in support of conservation, education, craftsmanship and music at Canterbury Cathedral. Andrew replaces Matthew Butler, who in November told the Trustees of his plan to stand down this summer after more than three years in the role, during which time the total raised by Charity has reached around £12m.

The life of well-known Kent artist John Ward will be celebrated at a special event at Canterbury Cathedral. New Chief Executive Officer for Folkestone Rainbow Centre
Jon Wilson will be the next CEO of the Christian charity, the Folkestone Rainbow Centre. English Heritage urges congregations to use free practical guide
