Three Church Schools achieve 'Outstanding' SIAS Inspections
Three church schools in the Diocese have been classed as 'outstanding' in their recent Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools (SIAS) inspection. The successful schools are: All Souls Cheriton (VA) Primary, St John's Maidstone (VA) Primary and Eastchurch (VC) Primary. A SIAS inspection occurs shortly after an OFSTED inspection and focuses on aspects of the school which make it distinctive and effective as a church school.

Nearly 1,000 people attend the Episcopal Visitation
Nearly 1,000 people including 340 Church Wardens attended a special 'Episcopal Visitations' service held in the Cathedral on 12 May. Preaching at the service, Bishop Trevor said: "Your willingness to know and serve our communities and the way you live out your ministry or office can help lead people to God."

Synod News
On 8 May, 130 members of Synod met for a productive and lively meeting with discussions about the direction of the Diocese, a presentation about the work of church schools and information on Clergy Terms and Conditions. Triumph (or miracle) for Diocesan Cricket Team!
The new Diocese of Canterbury cricket team conquered Winchester Diocese in their match on Monday. Neville Emslie described the victory as a 'triumph'; Canterbury Diocese made 229 and dismissed Winchester for 130.
The team plays Chichester on Monday 7th June at Sutton Valance School. More players, helpers and supporters are welcome - contact Neville: nemslie@diocant.org

Bishop visits Dover Detainee Visitor Group
Bishop Trevor praised the work of the Dover Detainee Visitor Group when he met volunteers and staff on Tuesday. The Charity which provides assistance and friendship to immigrants detained in Dover, also supports ex-detainees and their families. Poverty and Hope
The 2009/10 'Money, Money, Money' Poverty and Hope appeal raised a total of £30,120 - approximately £4,000 more than last year. The funds will be used for the construction of a secondary school in Madagascar, support for a centre for children with disabilities in Peshawar, an education project for street porters in Bolivia, dance clubs for young people in Central Asia and for an education programme for children in Kent to learn about global sustainability. The 2010/11 appeal will be launched early in September.

General Synod - 'be part of the big picture'
Could you 'be part of the big picture' and become a member of General Synod, the parliament of the Church of England for the next five years? Canterbury Diocese has the opportunity to elect three clergy and three lay people. Elections are held in the autumn and nominations are open until July.

Jean Ireland to retire
Jean Ireland will be retiring from her post in the Board of Education on the 17th June. Nigel Genders, Director of Education said: "Jean has made an enormous contribution to our work and I am extremely grateful for all that she has done." Jean will be re-locating to West Sussex later in the summer.

70+ ALM Students complete their ALM Studies this month
At the end of June 2010 over 70 ALM students and their incumbents will attend a Saturday ministry morning at St Paul's Parish Centre in Canterbury. This will be an opportunity for all the students to join together and celebrate their achievements and to give brief group overviews of the different electives and to look forward to their ongoing ministry in their parishes.

Working Together in the Diocese - events
A number of open meetings are being held with the Bishop of Dover and the Diocesan Secretary to help the Diocese plan ahead into 2011 and towards the next 5 years of ministry in the Diocese. The draft budget for 2011 will also be available. The meetings have been set for 7.30pm on the following dates:

  • June 8th 2010 (Tuesday) - Maidstone St Paul's Church Hall
  • June 9th 2010 (Wednesday) - Dover St Mary Church Hall
  • June 21st 2010 (Monday) - Kingsnorth Church (Ashford)

    Child Protection/Vulnerable Adults Information Events
    With a new CRB form, the implementation of the Vetting and Barring scheme and ISA registration, the Diocese has arranged two evenings in June to ensure our safeguarding procedures are fit for purpose. The events will look at:

    • Using the new CRB application form
    • ISA registration
    • Vetting and Barring: principles and procedures
    Both sessions are from 7pm - 9pm and refreshments will be available on arrival.

    Open Gardens
    The private gardens of the clergy at Canterbury Cathedral will be open to all on the weekend of the 5 and 6 June 2010. The gardens will be open from 11.00 am - 5.30 pm on Saturday, 5 June and 2.00 pm - 5.30 pm on Sunday 6 June. Admission to the gardens will cost £4; and normal precincts entry charges will apply.

    Retreat Day at the Quiet View (Kingston nr Canterbury)

    Led by Brother Martin, an Indian Benedictine monk and Father Bede Griffiths Ashram in South India.     Hospice Labyrinth Available for All Church Groups
    Pilgrims Hospice, Canterbury Therapeutic Labyrinth Garden is open for groups of all kinds to walk the labyrinth. It is a space to pray, reflect, find rest and peace and spiritual refreshment or guidance. If you would like to bring a group to walk the labyrinth, the hospice can provide facilitators to explain the meaning of the labyrinth and help the group to explore its potential for inner healing.     for homeless people celebrates 20th anniversary

    The 20th annual sponsored walk and Pilgrimage from St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, London to Canterbury takes place between Friday May 28 and Monday May 31, 2010. Created to increase awareness of the problems of homelessness in central London as well as the surrounding countryside it has this year attracted the maximum 120 walkers including "clients" using the services of the organisation for homeless people, The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields.
