2006 Guidelines
for Continuing Ministerial Education Grants

Readers

Readers are encouraged to continue developing their knowledge and understanding, skills and spirituality throughout their active ministry. The Diocesan Board of Readers is allocated a fixed budget from Diocesan funds to provide for CME grants.

Types of courses

Grants are available for educational and training events which encourage appropriate continuing development in the exercise of ministry. Lines have to be drawn as to what is appropriate education and training given limited resources. Something which leads to increasing competence in exercising the ministry expected by the deanery and local church is likely to be regarded as appropriate development. Ideally, further education needs and development should arise from annual review. Annual conferences of organisations will not normally be funded in full e.g. NEAC, New Wine, Affirming Catholicism.

When considering a course you might like to ask yourself: 'Will it make a difference to the mission of the parish or deanery?'

How much grant?

Requests for assistance for up to £50 will be agreed by the Warden of Readers on a first-come first served basis.

Requests for assistance over £50 will be considered by the Warden and another member of the Readers' Board. They will take account of the level of funding Readers may have received from this diocesan account in a previous year so that Readers who receive substantially more than £50 will not be granted more than £50 the next year.

Other Grants

Grants towards fees for longer courses of study such as degree courses may be available from the Adams Fund, administered by the Central Readers Council. Application for the Adams Fund grants are made via the Warden.

Application Procedure

Application for CME grants need to be made in advance of the event/course to be attended. The diocese prefers to send the cheque, wherever possible, directly to the organisation concerned. Application can be made by email to the Warden hrichter@diocant.org or by letter to The Warden of Readers, Diocesan House, Lady Wootton's Green, Canterbury, CT1 1NQ. This application should state how the proposed course relates to ongoing ministerial development and whether it has been discussed in the context of your annual review. The application should be sent together with information about the event/course.
