New Ministry for Island
celebrated by Bishop of Dover

The Bishop of Dover led a special service at Minster on Thursday 15 April to license and celebrate a new type of ministry on the Isle of Sheppey.

Described by the Bishop as a 'very important and remarkable step for the community' the service saw Reverend Canon Arthur Houston licensed as the new Priest-in-Charge for Minster, along with the licensing of four other ministers.

In front of an audience of more than 100 people including the Mayor of Swale, Councillor Adrian Crowther and Mayoress Mrs Pamela Berry, a total of 15 licenses were issued which will enable all the priests on the island to work as assistants in other parishes, enabling a shared ministry across the island.

The Bishop of Dover, Right Reverend Trevor Willmott preached at the service on the themes of reconciliation and love. Describing Canon Houston as "hugely gifted and experienced', the Bishop asked the community to work together. He said: "Do not be tempted to look to Arthur for all the answers. Together you will find them. Tonight's service is about all of us working together to serve the community on this island."

Following the licensing and installation a number of local people publicly welcomed Canon Houston, including the Mayor Councillor Adrian Crowther, Ms Jackie Ridley a member of the congregation and Peter Welch of the United Reformed Church.

Canon Houston expressed his delight at the welcome he received saying: "I am looking forward to working closely with you all."
